Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária

A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária fica localizada no centro da cidade do Rio de Janeiro em uma das vias mais importantes, a Avenida Presidente Vargas. Sua história teve início no século XVII, quando uma pequena capela foi construída pelo casal espanhol (Antonio Martins de Paula e Leonor Magalhães) em homenagem a Nossa Senhora da Candelária. Eles estavam cumprindo uma promessa por conseguir portar no Rio de Janeiro sobrevivendo a uma tempestade em alto mar.

Gradativamente a igreja foi passando por sucessivas reformas e ampliações no passar dos anos tendo até, em um dado momento, com altares esculpidos pelo Mestre Valentim, mas que foram substituídos. Algumas modificações foram realizadas pelo engenheiro Antônio de Paula Freitas (1843-1906) que foi “responsável pelo projeto e construção das duas sacristias laterais, em 1877 e pelo desenho e colocação – em colaboração com Heitor de Cordoville – do novo revestimento interno em mármore italiano, além da instalação das belíssimas portas em bronze, em 1901” (FREITAS, 2016). Esse revestimento seguia o modelo neo-renascentista italiano. Quanto as portas em bronze na entrada da Igreja são de autoria do escultor português António Teixeira Lopes (1866-1942).

As pinturas internas da Igreja são de autoria do pintor e professor da Escola de Belas Artes o brasileiro João Zeferino da Costa (1840-1915) que realizou o trabalho com a ajuda de diversos artistas como, por exemplo, Henrique Bernardelli (1857-1936) que contribuiu com estudos da “pinturas do teto da capela mor, vitrais do coro e para-vento” (DAZZI, 2007), Oscar Pereira da Silva (1867-1939) que trabalhou “como ajudante de Zeferino na decoração da igreja” (Itaú Cultural, 2017), o italiano Giovanni Battista Castagneto (1951-1900), Pinto Bandeira (1863-1896), Augusto Rodrigues Duarte (1848-1888) também trabalharam na pintura da igreja.

Um fato curioso é que a fachada da Igreja é voltada para a Baía de Guanabara visto que, naquela época, era a principal entrada na cidade. Deve-se levar em consideração que

“O traçado da avenida Presidente Vargas, decidido pelo governo do Estado Novo, encontrou em seu caminho cinco igrejas coloniais. Quatro delas, entre as quais uma já tombada pelo Patrimônio Histórico, foram sumariamente eliminadas. A conservação da quinta, a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária, situada no início da avenida, previa a mudança de orientação da fachada e torres, o famoso projeto do “giro da Candelária”, que em razão do alto custo financeiro acabou não sendo executado” (RIBEIRO; JUSTINIANO, 2008. p.31)  

A Igreja da Candelária é um importante patrimônio carioca que foi preservado e que precisa ser visitado, conhecido e valorizado.

Church of Nossa Senhora da Candelária

The Church of Nossa Senhora da Candelária is located in the center of the city of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in one of the most important roads, Avenida Presidente Vargas. Its history began in the 17th century, when a small chapel was built by the Spanish couple (Antonio Martins de Paula and Leonor Magalhães) in honor of Our Lady of Candelaria. They were fulfilling a promise to be able to harbor in Rio de Janeiro surviving a storm on the high seas.

Gradually the church underwent successive reforms and extensions over the years, having at some point, with altars sculpted by Master Valentine, but which were replaced. Some modifications were made by the engineer Antônio de Paula Freitas (1843-1906) who was responsible for the design and construction of the two lateral sacristies in 1877 and for the design and placement of the new Italian marble internal lining in collaboration with Heitor de Cordoville , besides the installation of the beautiful bronze doors, in 1901 "(FREITAS, 2016). This coating followed the Italian neo-Renaissance model. The bronze doors at the entrance to the church are written by the Portuguese sculptor António Teixeira Lopes (1866-1942).

The interior paintings of the Church are authored by the Brazilian painter and professor of the School of Fine Arts the Brazilian João Zeferino da Costa (1840-1915) who carried out the work with the help of several artists, such as Henrique Bernardelli (1857-1936) who contributed to studies of "Ceiling Chapel Ceiling Paintings, Choir Stained Glass and Windshield" (DAZZI, 2007), Oscar Pereira da Silva (1867-1939) who worked "as Zeferino's helper in the decoration of the church" (Itaú Cultural, 2017) the Italian Giovanni Battista Castagneto (1951-1900), Pinto Bandeira (1863-1896), Augusto Rodrigues Duarte (1848-1888) also worked in the painting of the church.

A curious fact is that the facade of the Church is facing the Guanabara Bay since, at that time, it was the main entrance into the city. It should be borne in mind that

"The layout of Avenida Presidente Vargas, decided by the Estado Novo government, found in its way five colonial churches. Four of them, among them one already registered by the Historical Patrimony, were summarily eliminated. The conservation of the fifth, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Candelária, located at the beginning of the avenue, foresaw the change of orientation of the facade and towers, the famous project of the "Candelária turn", which due to the high financial cost was not executed "(RIBEIRO JUSTINIANO, 2008. p.31).

The Church of the Candelaria is an important Carioca heritage that has been preserved and that needs to be visited, known and valued.
